Budget Graphing Tools Overview

About the Budget Graphing Tools

  • How has the federal budget changed over time?
  • How much has the federal budget grown since 1946 to the present?
  • How has the budget for defense versus education changed?
  • What percent of the total federal budget is devoted to education and what percent is devoted to defense?

These are just a few of the questions that can be answered by using the Budget graphing tools. We have two tools for graphing budget trends:

  • The Budget Trends Tool charts the budget and budget changes in Fiscal Year 2006 Dollars and in Current Year Dollars for the total budget and budget functions.
  • The Budget Distributions Tool charts the percent of the total budget that each function and subfunction comprises, allowing for comparisons of budget priorities over time.

To chart the budget trends and policy trends together, please visit our mixed policy-budget tool.

Users may also wish to see our budget resource page where a range of data sources and analysis tools are provided, including links to comparative budget projects like the Degrees of Democracy project in Canada.
